On Monday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Kyiv for 12 hours, where she met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and another massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Ukraine. According to Yellen, another $1.25 billion will be provided to Ukraine in the form of economic and budget assistance.
The additional assistance is part of a push by the Biden administration to continue to show support for Ukraine while maintaining putting pressure on Russia. The Biden administration will also need to find a way to persuade China not to send lethal weapons to Russia as it is currently considering doing.
As part of the effort to keep Russia and China isolated, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to visit 2 former Soviet republics this week, where he is expected to urge them to keep their distance from Russia and China respectively.

After arriving in Ukraine on her unannounced trip, Yellen vowed that the U.S. would “stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
The recent trips of both Yellen and President Biden earlier this month come amid the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and as the U.S. prepares to disburse an additional $10 billion in aid.
“We know this war hasn’t just taken countless innocent Ukrainian lives. It has also served as a tremendous shock to the Ukrainian economy,” Yellen said as she announced the $1.25 billion transfer.
“Your stead hand and prudent economic management in the face of tremendous economic challenges has made a meaningful impact in helping stabilize Ukraine’ss economy,” she added.
While many Americans are eager to see Ukraine win its war with Russia, they are not as eager to watch their government hand over billions upon billions of taxpayer dollars to a country whose government is well-known for its corruption.
