UPDATE: Kosovo’s Ruling Party Votes To Remove Speaker Of Parliament Vjosa Osmani From Its Leadership

On June 20, Kosovo’s ruling pary, Kosovo’s Democratic League (LDK) voted to dismiss the country’s Speaker of Parliament Vjosa Osmani from her deputy leader position and to remove her from the party’s leadership.

Isa Mustafa asked for Osmani’s dismissal earlier that day and members held a vote online. 70 out of 123 members supported Mustafa’s proposal.

Mustafa asked the party committee that Osmani be replaced by Avdullah Hoti, Kosovo’s newly appointed Prime Minister. He argued that LDK’s statute forbids one from retaining their leadership position within the party if one publicly opposes decisions made by the party’s organs.

Osmani voted against the LDK-initiated motion that ousted the government of Albin Kurti. According to Mustafa, her stance was in opposition to that of LDK’s leadership. Additionally, Osmani refused to lead the session wherein Kosovo’s parliament voted in the Hoti government.

As a young politician in the country’s oldest party, Vjosa Osmani was the LDK’s most voted MP, and its candidate for Prime Minister, during Kosovo’s last elections in 2019, with a total of 176,016 votes, only about eight thousand votes short of the most voted politician in Kosovo, Albin Kurti.

Osmani is among the most vocal opponents of a territorial exchange deal between Kosovo and Serbia.
