Albin Kurti: Mini-Schengen Within Berlin Process, Western Balkans Should Join EU En Bloc

In a leaked video from a roundtable on the margins of the Munich Security Conference, attended by EU and Western Balkans leaders, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti spoke of the most crucial topics involving his country at present, including Balkan Mini-Schengen initiative and his government’s plans on restarting the dialogue with Serbia.

  • On the EU enlargement, he said the six remaining Balkans states should join the EU en bloc, as the only viable solution for the region.
  • On the Balkan Mini-Schengen, he stated that it should be integrated within the framework of Berlin Process, where all sic Balkan countries can participate.
  • On regional economic development, he said the EU should provide a “Mini-Marshal Plan” for the Balkans.
  • On a possible Kosovo-Serbia agreement, he argued that three principles should be put in place in order to “heal the wounds” of Presidents Thaçi and Vučić’s failed plan to exchange territories: (1) No agreement without dialogue, (2) No dialogue over maps, and (3) No presidents negotiating over maps.

Kurti concluded by urging the countries attending the Munich Security conference to help Serbia “liberate” itself from Kosovo by recognizing it as an independent state:

“Almost 20 years have passed since you helped Kosovo get liberated from Serbia. I think it’s now time you help Serbia to get liberated from Kosovo.”
