Sources in Russia told Russian newspaper Izvestia that the Kremlin may expel 30 U.S. diplomats and seize U.S. property in Russia if the U.S. government does not return Russian diplomatic compounds in the the U.S. and remove all sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, would not comment on the specific news but did say Russia was considering ‘specific measures’ to retaliate against the U.S. measures.

The issue was discussed at the first ever meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump at the recent G20 gathering in Hamburg, Germany. However, the issue was not resolved, reported U.S. News.

With the continued sanctions, and the price of crude continuing to languish on international markets, the Kremlin is hurting financially, as well as the Russian economy.

Removing sanctions against Russia would be a boon to growth and remove impediments to acquiring capital for Russian companies and sovereign borrowing on global markets.
