Bulgarians turned out in large numbers in Sofia and across the country on Sunday to show their dissatisfaction with the government’s ruling elites and their handlers in the European Union. Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of the nationalist Vazrazhdane Party, called on supporters: “This Sunday we go out to defend our right to live in a Free, Independent and Prosperous Country! We are saying: NO to the weapon for Ukraine! NO to the euro in Bulgaria! No to the Istanbul Convention!”

The rally started at 2pm in front of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. From there, the protesters marched to the European Commission building in the capital to protest Brussels’ meddling in Bulgaria’s internal affairs. “If we do not stop the European Union’s intervention in Bulgaria’s internal affairs,” Kostadinov explained, “it will destroy our Motherland! It’s either us or them! The time has come to separate.”

During the protest, the building of the European Commission in Sofia was smeared with red paint. The demonstration blocked traffic on G.S. Rakovski Boulevard in the capital. Kostadinov declared on Facebook, “This is just the beginning.” Bulgarians overwhelmingly oppose involvement in the war in Ukraine and are opposed to the radical gender ideology being promoted by the European Union and the United States.

Protesters also came out in support of the proposed Referendum for Peace and Sovereignty. Volunteers gathered signatures in support of the initiative. The questions of the intended referendum, announced in April, are to secure Bulgaria’s neutrality and sovereignty and to hold national referendums on important matters affecting the state. Vazrazhdane has already forced a referendum on adopting the euro which is expected to be held in the fall.

One of the organizers of the protest in Sofia, Nako Stefanov, said “We are here to defend peaceful Bulgaria. We must say that our march is for peace and against war. Not the President, not the government or the National Assembly but the Bulgarian people should say whether they want war or peace.”

The leader of the globalist GERB party, Boyko Borisov, who has been arrested for corruption and accused of having ties to organized crime, condemned the protesters on Facebook. The leader of the largest parliamentary formation resorted to typical globalist talking points, accusing his opponents of being allies of Russia: “I once again call on the democratic mainstream parties to stand united around Bulgaria’s national interests and to form a strong regular government. The only antidote to the hybrid attempts at spreading malicious Russian influence in our society is to provide guarantees for our further Euro-Atlantic integration.”
