Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko issued a warning on Thursday saying that if Belarus is either threatened or comes under attack, the country’s army is ready to join the war in Ukraine and fight alongside the Russians.
At a news conference, Lukashenko warned, “I am ready to fight with the Russians from the territory of Belarus in only one case: If even one soldier comes onto the territory of Belarus to kill my people.”
“If they commit aggression against Belarus, the response will be the most severe, and the war will take on a completely different nature,” he concluded.

Belarus is already under U.S. and EU sanctions for its assistance thus far with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Namely, for serving as a staging ground for Russian forces ahead of the invasion.
For several months, Ukrainian officials have warned that Belarus is preparing to officially enter the war. Allegations have also been made that Belarus has allowed Russia to launch drones from its territory. Russian drones have all but destroyed the Ukrainian infrastructure and terrorized its citizens for months.
Despite Lukashenko’s willingness to assist Moscow, he emphasized that Belarus will join the war “only” if his country is attacked first. Lukashenko extended his warning to other neighboring countries, saying, “This applies to our other neighbors. If they commit an aggression against Belarus, our response will be the most cruel. The most cruel!”
“I do not plan to send my people, my soldiers (there)” to Ukraine, Lukashenko added. It has been reported that Belarus is still hosting an unknown number of Russian troops but that Lukashenko has vowed not to send his forces across the border to Ukraine. Belarusian forces are estimated to be between 60,000 and 70,000.
In the meantime, the Kremlin has announced that Lukashenko and Putin will participate in talks regarding the ongoing strategic partnership between the two countries on Friday.
