In addition to the Biden administration sending an additional $2.2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, this round will include longer-range rockets that Kyiv has been eager to receive. The donation of longer-range rockets comes a week after the U.S. and Germany announced that they would be sending M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

In addition to the longer-range rockets, the U.S. will also be providing additional munitions and weapons including, support equipment for the Patriot air defense systems, Javelin anti-tank weapons, and precision guided munitions.

Of the $2.2 billion aid package, $1.725 billion of the aid would come from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) fund, which allows the Biden administration to get weapons directly from the industry, rather than having to drawdown from existing U.S. weapons stockpiles.

The USAI funds are to go toward the purchase of the new Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), which is manufactured by Boeing Co. (BA.N) and has a range of 94 miles (150 km). The U.S. has continuously declined to send the longer-range ATACMS that have a range of 185 miles (297 km), despite repeated requests from Ukraine.

While none of the weapons or munition being provided as part of the most recent aid package require U.S. personnel to perform maintenance or operate the weapons, U.S. military personnel will be required to operate and maintain the M1 Abrams tanks that the U.S. agreed to send last week.

When asked this week if the U.S. will provide the F-16 jets that Kyiv is now asking for, Biden answered with a simple “no” before walking away.

It should be noted that last March Biden also claimed, adamantly, that the U.S. would not provide tanks to Ukraine saying at the time, “The idea that we’re going to send in offensive equipment and have planes and tanks and trains going in with American pilots and American crews – just understand, don’t kid yourself, no matter what y’all say, that’s called World War III.”

And yet, here we are, with 60 Bradley Fighting Vehicles leaving U.S. ports for Ukraine earlier this week with M1 Abrams tanks set to follow… and possibly F-16s.
