According to a State Department Press Release, the United States and Bulgaria signed a memorandum on Monday to cooperate “to counter foreign information manipulation.” The move to extend the U.S. media censorship campaign that has been aimed at conservative media outlets comes only months after the U.S. Embassy in Sofia brokered a new government uniting globalist political forces in the Balkan nation.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Under Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Public Diplomacy Liz Allen and Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel. According to the press release, the Memorandum “provides a strong foundation for both countries to work together against the spread of disinformation and media manipulation, an increasing threat in Central and Eastern Europe.”
The new Bulgarian Government has already begun to crack down on conservative and other anti-globalist media outlets as it implements U.S. policy, including providing military support for Ukraine, to the detriment of its own people. Polls show that an overwhelming 70% of the Bulgarian population opposes providing military aid to Ukraine.
The State Department claims that the Memorandum of Understanding “signals a commitment by the United States and Bulgaria to develop a shared approach to better understanding foreign disinformation and building collaborative mechanisms to counteract its threat. The United States and Bulgaria recognize that authoritarian governments manipulate information and spread disinformation to influence people around the world. This MOU demonstrates the commitment of the United States and Bulgaria to work together, and with like-minded nations, to counteract information manipulation. This cooperation includes national policy making, support for civil society, and multilateral engagement.”
