After receiving the mandate from President Rumen Radev to attempt to form a new government following last month’s elections, GERB-UDF, the largest political formation in the current Bulgarian parliament has named Mariya Ivanova Gabriel as Prime Minister-designate.  Gabriel has served as European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth since 2019. She previously served as Member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2017.

Prime Minister-designate Gabriel will meet with representatives of different parliamentary groups on Thursday. The talks will focus on gaining support for a government to pull Bulgaria out of the political crisis as no party has a parliamentary majority. She will meet with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, BSP for Bulgaria, and There Is Such a People. She will meet with the Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition, the second-largest parliamentary group, on Friday afternoon.

There is no meeting scheduled with Vazrazhdane, the third-largest political formation in Parliament at this time. The political party led by Konstadin Kostadinov rejects the globalist agenda of both main political formations and has affirmed that his party will not support a government that pursues that agenda or which continues support for the war in Ukraine.
