In a stunning upset, former Minister of Economy, Jakov Milatović won a decisive victory in Sunday’s runoff presidential election in Montenegro, bringing an end to the 32-year rule of Milo Đukanović.

Đukanović, the incumbent president who has ruled the small nation as a virtual dictator for over three decades, received 39.8% of the votes, while Jakov Milatović received 60.2%. Milatović who represents the Europe Now movement was Montenegro’s Minister of Economy from December 2020 to April 2022.

During the first round of voting on March 19, Milatović won only 28.92% of votes, placing second to Đukanović who had received 35.37%. But the opposition to the Montenegrin strongman rallied around Milatović. He received the support of Serbs and those frustrated with the corrupt globalist agenda of Đukanović.

The defeat of Milo Đukanović was celebrated in the capital of Podgorica and in cities across the small Balkan nation. In a festive atmosphere, people hailed the end of the Đukanović regime, singing and waving Serbian and Montenegrin flags. Đukanović, who had long been a puppet of the globalists, was widely despised by Serbs, the largest minority group in the country, as the man who betrayed Serbia and the Serbian people by recognizing the independence of Kosovo. He also tried to exile the Serbian Orthodox Church from the country.

The President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik was among the first to congratulate the newly elected Montenegrin President. “I congratulate Jakov Milatović on the election as President of Montenegro. I hope that he will lead Montenegro on the path of progress and prosperity and that in the spirit of good neighborly relations we will successfully cooperate for the benefit of the citizens of both Montenegro and Republika Srpska.”
