The Romanian 15-year-old had her arms amputated in a severe traffic accident. A team of 10 doctors managed to reattach them during a 20-hour-long surgery.
A terrible accident took place in Romania on the night of December 17th. Twenty-five victims (twelve children and thirteen adults) were injured. Among them was a 15-year-old girl who had both arms amputated. She was transferred to the St. Mary Children’s Hospital in Iași, where a team of 2 orthopedic doctors, 3 anesthesiologists, 5 plastic surgery doctors, and a dozen nurses fought to reattach her arms for 20 hours.
The operation was a success. She is expected to regain at least 85% of use in her arms.
“Fortunately, up to this point, we can say the operation was a success. The team managed to reattach both arms. One was completely amputated, and the other was devascularized. The girl is not intubated and breathes by herself, and her prognosis is favorable. She will need additional reconstructive surgeries,” said doctor Sidonia Susanu.
Not much is yet known about the accident. Local authorities believe the bus might have slid on ice. All the passengers were members of a folk ensemble. A gas station employee saw the bus turned over in a ditch and called the emergency number. It took 17 emergency vehicles to break out the windows and pull the passengers out.
