Russian Senator Downplays New EU, Georgian Visa Regime

The European Parliament decision on the liberalization of the visa regime for Georgia will have a stabilizing effect on the country, a Russian senator declared.

The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of Russia Konstantin Kosachev, proposed not to overestimate the introduction of a visa-free regime between the EU and Georgia, noting that it would have no impact on relations between Russia-Georgia-EU.

The European Parliament on Thursday voted for the abolition of the EU visa regime for Georgia.

“I would not put this event as something considered in the context of bilateral relations (Russia and Georgia)”, – Kosachev told journalists on Thursday.

The senator stressed that the conflict between Russia and Georgia was delayed. There have been no diplomatic relations for nearly ten years and Georgia is in no way close to the issues on Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Kosachev believes the decision taken by the European Parliament does not change relations between Russia, Georgia and the EU:

“I would not overestimate this decision (of the European Parliament)”, – Proposed the legislator.
