One person was killed as an armed group stormed the headquarters of the police in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, local media reported on early Sunday.
The local police chief, Valery Osipyan, was held hostage according to local news sources. Security troops were dispatched to the headquarter, and the head of the country’s security, Vladimir Gasparyan, was also present at the scene.
The Armenian National Security service said that no coup attempt was underway in Yerevan, and said that they are negotiating for a peaceful surrender of the attackers, reports the Daily Sabah.
Founding Parliament member Varuzhan Avetisyan said that those seizing the building are also members of the initiative. They demand that founder of the movement Jirair Sefilian who was arrested several weeks ago, be set free, reported Panarmenian.net. He said that the police used an armed vehicle to attack those seizing the building, a retaliatory fire broke, injuring several people.
