Kosovo President And Political Parties Discuss Snap Election Date

Kosovo’s Acting President Vjosa Osmani held consultation with the four largest parties regarding the possible date for snap election in the country.

It comes after Monday’s ruling of the Constitutional Court that the current government was voted in violation of the Constitution, and that Kosovo should go to snap elections.

The country’s President is bound by the Constitution to consult with political parties before deciding on an election date.

Osmani first met with the leader of Kosovo’s largest party, Vetevendosje’s (LVV) Albin Kurti. LVV has long pushed for snap elections. Kurti urged Osmani to decide on an election date as soon as possible once the Constitutional Court publishes the full ruling.

The head of the second largest party, Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Isa Mustafa sent the party’s secretary, Arban Abrashi to meet with Osmani. Abrashi told journalists that his party supports snap elections, and suggested February 7 as their preferred option.

The opposition’s Democratic Party (PDK) of Kosovo was represented by deputy head Memli Krasniqi, who stressed that his party has long called for the dissolution of parliament and new elections. He said the end of January is the right time for elections to be held, adding that it’s too early to talk of coalition allies.

The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)’s secretary Besnik Tahiri also met with Osmani, and expressed his party’s readiness for elections. He said elections should be held before  May 5, which is the expiration date of Osmani’s term as Acting President.

AAK’s leader Ramush Haradinaj had put forward his candidacy for Kosovo’s President under the current parliament before the ruling of the Constitutional Court.

Osmani will continue consultations with political parties on Wednesday.

Elections must be held within 40 days after the President announces the date.
