Afghans headed to the polls Saturday to elect a new president while the Taliban kept up violent attacks against some polling stations. Peace talks with the Trump administration were broken off after a suicide bombing in recent weeks.

Some 72,000 security personnel were expected to secure polling centers across the country, which opened at 7 a.m. and were originally scheduled to close at 3 p.m., but the Independent Election Commission later extended voting by two hours until 5 p.m., reported RFERL.

This is the fourth presidential election for the new Afghan government after the fall of the Taliban during the Bush administration.
