Lavrov Praises Trump’s Approach On Ukraine
Russia Says Trump Understands Kyiv Control Of Donbass Won't Solve Problem
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, today praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to the conflict in East Ukraine. The war has simmered for several years now in the Donbass region and has killed over 10,000 people since its inception in 2014. The diplomatic world has been on edge waiting to see how Trump would deal with the situation in the East. It now seems Kyiv may have reason to be worried, as Trump looks to take a hands off approach per recent comments he made to the press.
Lavrov said the United States now understood that restoring Kiev’s control over eastern Ukraine would not solve all the problems in the country, reported Russian State News Agency TASS.
“(Trump) said he wants to get to grips with everything in Ukraine and understand how to behave. This, I already believe, is a big and qualitative shift compared to the Obama’s administration.
“If someone is hoping that all the problems in Ukraine can simply be solved by restoring the control of the current regime in Donbass, that is Utopia,” Lavrov said.
“Everyone understands that, and in Europe, including Paris, Berlin and Brussels. And Washington also understands that, they began to understand it even under the previous administration.”
